Pathological Psychoanalysis: An Insider’s
View of the Sullivanian/Fourth Wall

This account focuses on the four therapists I had
during the 21 years that I was involved with the
Sullivan Institute/Fourth Wall community. I
have been out of the community for 28 years.
My experiences with each therapist were very
different and occurred at different stages of my
life within the group. I recount in this paper
both how I experienced and was influenced by
these therapists while I was in the group and my
later reflections after I had left the group. My
narrative focuses on both the therapists’ positive
and negative influences in my own life and in
the lives of others.

ex miembro desde hace 28. Mis experiencias

lo que viví, cómo me influenciaron mientras era
miembro, y mis posteriores reflexiones después
de haber abandonado el grupo. Mi narración
aborda las influencias negativas y positivas de
los terapeutas tanto en mi propia vida como en la
de otras personas.

adepte de la communauté Sullivanienne de
psychothérapie, dite du Quatrième Mur (Fourth
Wall)

Ce récit se concentre sur les quatre thérapeutes
que j'ai eu au cours des 21 années que j'ai passé
dans l'Institut Sullivan, dite communauté du
quatrième mur. Cela fait 28 ans que j’ai quitté la
communauté. Mes expériences avec chaque
thérapeute ont été très différentes et ont eu lieu à
différentes étapes de ma vie au sein du groupe.
Je raconte dans cet essai ce que j’ai expérimenté
dans ce groupe, l’influence des thérapeutes, et
mes réflexions ultérieures après l’avoir quitté.
Mon récit se concentre sur les influences
positives et négatives que ces thérapeutes ont sur
ma propre vie et sur la vie d’autres personnes.

Dieser Bericht befasst sich mit den vier
Therapeuten, die ich während der 21 Jahre hatte,
in denen ich an der Sullivan Institute/Fourth
Wall Community beteiligt war. Ich habe die
Community vor 28 Jahren verlassen. Meine
Erfahrungen mit jedem der Therapeuten waren
sehr unterschiedlich und ereigneten sich in
verschiedenen Abschnitten meines Lebens
innerhalb der Gruppe. Ich berichte in dieser
Arbeit, welche Erfahrungen ich mit diesen
Therapeuten machte und wie ich durch sie
beeinflusst wurde, während ich in der Gruppe
war, und über meine späteren Überlegungen,
nachdem ich die Gruppe verlassen hatte. Mein
Bericht beleuchtet die positiven und negativen
Einflüsse auf mein eigenes Leben und das Leben
anderer.

della comunità Sullivan Institute/Fourth Wall.
Sono fuori dalla comunità da 28 anni. Le mie
esperienze con ogni terapeuta erano molto
diverse e si sono verificate in diverse fasi della
mia vita all'interno del gruppo. In questa
relazione racconto come ho vissuto e come sono
stato influenzato da questi terapeuti mentre ero
nel gruppo e le mie riflessioni successive dopo
che avevo lasciato il gruppo. Il mio racconto si
