The Influence Continuum—the Good, the
Dubious, and the Harmful—Evidence and
Implications for Policy and Practice in the
21st Century

This article is the transcript of the Inaugural
Professorial Lecture delivered by the author at
the University of Glamorgan on 9th December
2008.

Influence amongst human beings is ubiquitous:
It is literally everywhere—in the words we use,
the things we see, even the air we breathe. Some
of this influence is profoundly beneficial—the
influence of education, of parents, or of loved
ones. Other forms of influence can be ethically
and morally questionable. At the other end of
this “continuum” are types of influence that are
terribly harmful: The dead of the Japanese,
Madrid, and London transport systems are vivid
casualties of undue influence at its extreme.
Empirical evidence will be presented in this
paper for the mindset that is established in
extremist groups, with implications for how
more benign forms of influence can be better
protected, monitored, and promoted.

La influencia entre los seres humanos es
omnipresente está literalmente en todas partes:
en las palabras que decimos, las cosas que
vemos, incluso en el aire que respiramos.
Alguna de esta influencia es profundamente
beneficiosa: la de la educación, la de los padres
o la de los seres que queremos. Sin embargo,
otras formas pueden resultar éticamente y
moralmente cuestionables. En el extremo de esta
gradación existen tipos de influencias
terriblemente dañinas: los muertos en los
transportes de Japón, Madrid y Londres
constituyen víctimas gráficas de una influencia
indebida. Junto con sus consecuencias, se
presentarán indicios empíricos del pensamiento
adoptado en grupos extremistas a fin de
proteger, controlar y promover más y mejores
formas benignas de influencia.

Beeinflussung zwischen menschlichen Wesen ist
allgegenwärtig: Sie ist buchstäblich überall – in
den Wörtern, die wir benützen, den Dingen, die
wir sehen, sogar in der Luft, die wir atmen.
Einige dieser Beeinflussungen sind zutiefst
nützlich – der Einfluss der Erziehung, der Eltern,
der Nahestehenden. Andere Formen von
Einfluss können ethisch und moralisch
fragwürdig sein. Am anderen Ende dieses
„Kontinuums“ befinden sich Arten von Einfluss,
die sehr schädlich sind: Die Toten des
japanischen, Madrider und Londoner
Transportsystems sind handgreifliche Opfer von
extrem ungebührlichem Einfluss. Empirische
Belege für die Gesinnung in Extremistengruppen
werden in diesem Beitrag vorgestellt, mit
Folgerungen, um wie viel eher gutartige Formen
von Einfluss besser geschützt, überwacht und
gefördert werden können.
