Artist’s Statement: Joy Prescott
In the early 1960s, my mother and another
woman helped a third woman, who was the
leader, found a UFO cult. By 1968, my mother’s
involvement with the cult caused her marriage to
break up, around the time that the cult was also
forced to leave the small island in Alaska where
we lived. My mother gave up custody of her four
children, and stayed in the cult for 15 long years
with little contact, except for the occasional letter.
The wall hanging depicts the agony this separation caused her children,
while in her beliefs she remained happy and oblivious to us.
Joy is a writer, photographer, fiber artist, and crochet pattern designer
living in Wrangell, Alaska. When not pursuing creative endeavors, she
can be found in the woods or on the beach, out fishing for salmon, or
spending time with her family. JoyPrescott.com
This work was included in both the 2012 (as original work) and the 2015
