Report From Italy
Raffaella Di Marzio
Conferences
On October 26, 2016, Raffaella Di
Marzio presented the paper Violazioni
trasversali della libertà di religione
e credo in Europa (Across-the-Board
Violations of Freedom of Religion and
Belief in Europe) at the conference
organized by the International
Association for the Defense of Freedom
of Religion (AIDLR), at the Italian
Parliament in Rome.
On November 11–12, 2016, the Italian
Society for the Psychology of Religion
(SIPR) and The University of Chieti
organized a conference on Religione,
Altruismo e violenza (Religion, Altruism
and Violence). Massimo Introvigne
presented the paper Fondamentalismo
e terrorismo. Dalle origini all’ISIS
(Fundamentalism and Terrorism, From
the Beginnings to ISIS), and Raffaella
Di Marzio presented the paper
Nuovi Movimenti Religiosi: esperienze
di affiliazione alla luce del modello
integrato di Rambo e collaboratori (New
Religious Movements: Experiences of
Affiliation According to the Rambo and
Collaborative Theoretical Framework).
The conference focused on the
topics of cooperation and violence
as oppositional forces and also as
forces that might both be fostered
by a religion or a religious faith. In
light of the complexity of these topics
and their several levels of analysis
(individual, social, historical, educative)
during the conference, some scholars
spoke about both the positive (e.g.,
peace, pluralism, interreligious
dialogue, well-being) and the negative
(e.g., intolerance, persecutions, ritual
mutilations, homicides/suicides,
terrorism) aspects of religious
affiliation/practice.
