Failure to Launch Rather Than Clear
Sailing: The Media-Focused Trials,
Triumphs, and Tribulations of the
Church of Scientology in Australia

This paper examines the short history of the
Church of Scientology in Australia and the high
profile efforts of the Church to achieve legal
recognition and social acceptance, against
considerable resistance. While the organization
succeeded in obtaining legal recognition before
the courts, the persistent failure to translate this
recognition into membership growth is noted.
Possible reasons for this failure are canvassed,
including initial governmental suppression,
alleged discrimination, community resistance to
a new, transplanted religion, and allegedly unfair
media reporting. In addition, the paper examines
complaints of persistent anti-social and harmful
behaviour associated with the organization, and
speculates on consumer resistance to the core
spiritual beliefs and the reputation of the
founder. It is noted that partially quantitative
assessments of unfair or even biased media
treatment should be treated with caution. It is
concluded that probable cause for any media
focus on the organization is due to the
persistence of complaints from former members
and critics, and the publicity seeking behaviour
of the Church.

Australia
Este artículo describe la breve historia de la
Iglesia de la Cienciología en Australia y sus
grandes esfuerzos por conseguir el
reconocimiento legal y la aceptación social en
medio de fuertes reticencias. Aunque ha
conseguido el reconocimiento legal ante los
juzgados, sigue fracasando en aumentar sus
miembros. La organización indaga posibles
causas, incluidas la represión gubernamental
inicial, la presunta discriminación, la resistencia
de la comunidad hacia una nueva religión
trasplantada y los supuestos reportajes parciales
de la prensa. Además, el artículo describe las
denuncias de un persistente comportamiento
antisocial y dañino de la organización, y
reflexiona sobre la oposición de los
consumidores a causa de las creencias religiosas
y la reputación del fundador. Cabe señalar que
muchas de estas valoraciones de trato injusto e
incluso sesgado han de ser tratadas con cautela.
Se concluye que la causa probable del eco
mediático se debe a la persistencia de quejas de
exmiembros y críticos, y a la búsqueda de
notoriedad de la Iglesia.

tribulations très médiatisés de l'Eglise de
Scientologie en Australie

Cet article examine la brève histoire de l'Église
de Scientologie en Australie et les efforts
remarquables qu'elle a déployés pour obtenir une
reconnaissance juridique et une approbation
sociale, malgré une résistance considérable. Bien
que l’organisation ait réussi à obtenir une
reconnaissance juridique devant les tribunaux, il
convient de noter l’échec persistant à traduire
cette reconnaissance en une augmentation du
nombre de ses membres.

Parmi les causes possibles de cet échec, nous
examinons notamment la répression exercée au
départ par le gouvernement, les discriminations
présumées, la résistance de la communauté à une
nouvelle religion transplantée et les reportages
prétendument injustes diffusés dans les
médias. En outre, cet article examine les
accusations récurrentes de comportement anti-
social et préjudiciable qu'on associe à cette
organisation, et il émet des hypothèses sur la
résistance des consommateurs aux croyances
spirituelles fondamentales et à la réputation du
fondateur. Il est à noter que les évaluations
partiellement quantitatives d'un traitement
médiatique injuste ou même biaisé doivent être
traitées avec prudence. Nous concluons sur le
fait que toute la médiatisation de l'organisation
est probablement due à la persistance des
plaintes des anciens membres et des opposants,
ainsi qu'au comportement de l'Église qui cherche
la publicité.

Leiden der Scientology-Kirche in Australien

Dieser Beitrag untersucht die kurze Geschichte
der Scientology-Kirche in Australien und die
hochrangigen Bemühungen der Kirche, gegen
erheblichen Widerstand eine rechtliche
Anerkennung und soziale Akzeptanz zu
erreichen. Während es der Organisation gelang,
die rechtliche Anerkennung vor den Gerichten
zu erlangen, wird das anhaltende Versäumnis
festgestellt, diese Anerkennung in
Mitgliederwachstum umzusetzen. Mögliche
Gründe für dieses Versagen werden angeführt,
darunter die anfängliche Unterdrückung durch
die Regierung, angebliche Diskriminierung,
Widerstand der Gemeinschaft gegen eine neue,
transplantierte Religion und angeblich unfaire
Medienberichterstattung. Darüber hinaus
untersucht das Papier Beschwerden über
anhaltendes asoziales und schädliches Verhalten
im Zusammenhang mit der Organisation und
spekuliert über den Widerstand der Verbraucher
gegen die spirituellen Grundüberzeugungen und
den Ruf des Gründers. Es wird darauf
hingewiesen, dass teilweise quantitative
Bewertungen von unfairen oder sogar
voreingenommenen Medienbehandlungen mit
Vorsicht zu genießen sind. Es wird der Schluss
gezogen, dass der wahrscheinliche Grund für die
Ausrichtung der Medien auf die Organisation in
den anhaltenden Beschwerden ehemaliger
Mitglieder und Kritiker und dem
publizitätssuchenden Verhalten der Kirche liegt.

W artykule przeprowadzono analizę krótkiej
historii Kościoła scjentologicznego w Australii i
szeroko znanych wysiłków tegoż Kościoła w
celu uzyskania prawnego uznania i akceptacji
społecznej wbrew niemałemu sprzeciwowi.
Mimo że organizacja odniosła sukces w
uzyskaniu prawnego uznania przed sądami,
notuje się regularne niepowodzenie w
przekuwaniu tego uznania na wzrost liczby
członków. Można dyskutować na ewentualnymi
przyczynami tego niepowodzenia, wliczając w
to początkowe ograniczenia ze strony rządu,
domniemaną dyskryminację, opór
społeczeństwa wobec nowej, przeszczepionej na
jego grunt religii, jak też rzekomo
niesprawiedliwe relacje ze strony mediów. Co
więcej, w artykule podjęto analizę skarg na
ustawicznie aspołeczne i szkodliwe zachowania
wiążące się z działalnością tej organizacji oraz
rozważono kwestię oporu wobec jej
podstawowych wierzeń religijnych i kwestię
reputacji jej założyciela. Zauważono również, że
częściowo kwantytatywne oceny
niesprawiedliwego lub nawet stronniczego
traktowania ze strony mediów należy traktować
z ostrożnością. Wyciągnięto wniosek, że
prawdopodobnym powodem zainteresowania
organizacją ze strony mediów są nieustanne
skargi płynące od byłych członków oraz
krytyków, jak też poszukiwanie rozgłosu przez
sam Kościół.
