Today: Riaan has completed his studies in graphic design and is employed as a
subcontracting graphic designer. In his free time, he paints and sketches, and does freelance
graphic design. Because of his interest in art therapy, Riaan volunteers as a community arts
worker at a home for those with mental disabilities. Some of his works appeared in the 2015

Self-Portrait (Pastel on pastel paper). Leaving the
cult, I had issues with the noise and filth of the life
“outside.” I regularly escaped from all the madness
to a place inside, in my mind’s eye, where it was
clean and beautiful.
Sun and Wind in Noordoek (Pastel on pastel paper). Nature, being outside of language, was an
escape from the dogma of the group, and from the overwhelming world outside the group.
Vaal Dam (Pastel on mounting board). The organic aesthetic of the natural landscape often strongly
opposes the rigid lines of the human-built landscape this contrast served me as an analogy for the
rigid conventions of our belief system, imposed on an otherwise free human spirit.
